An exploration in ceramics.
Ritwik Varma found ceramics in May 2022, he has since spent thousands of hours on the wheel exploring the possibilities with clay. Largely self-taught, this up-and-coming contemporary ceramicist employs playfulness and a wild curiosity in his one-of-a-kind pieces. Incorporating traditional techniques from Japanese, Korean and Chinese ceramic practices, he is unafraid of adding his own modern twist by integrating computer aided design and 3D printing to make his own tools and refine his voice in clay.
Primarily inspired by nature, Ritwik elegantly incorporates natural and organic elements throughout his creation process. Such as using the bark of the Cork Oak tree to add texture to his pieces, taking advantage of asymmetry in form and using organic materials such as leaves and flowers to create impressions in clay. His biggest artistic influences include Jackson Pollock, Vincent Van Gogh, Shozo Michikawa and George Ohr.
